A Syracuse Mom’s Guide to June 2016

We at Syracuse Moms Blog are very excited to introduce a new feature to our site – an ultimate monthly guide to fun family-friendly events happening in and around Syracuse! Our guide will be posted on the first of each month, and it’s super mobile friendly for when you’re out and about or on the go. We want to make sure that you don’t miss a thing, and we will be adding updates as they come, so make sure to visit our guide often to help you plan fun local things to do with the kiddos all month long. Minoa Field Days
Thursday June 2nd to Saturday June 4th

Enjoy field games, carnival rides, live music, food, drinks, fireworks and fun!

Where: Lewis Park, Minoa
When: 6pm to 10pm on Thursday, 6pm to 11:30pm on Friday, 12pm to 11:30pm on Saturday

Life With Your New Baby
Friday June 3rd

Crouse Hospital experts will lead group discussions that focus on the changes that new babies bring to families lives. Expecting and postpartum moms, dads, babies, and caregivers are welcome to attend, no matter where the baby was delivered!

The Taste of Syracuse
Friday June 3rd – Saturday June 4th

Join over 200,000 hungry visitors for two days of food and drink from local restaurants, wineries and breweries, live music, and lots of fun for the kiddos including a bounce house, magician and face painting.

Oz-Stravaganza
Friday June 3rd – Sunday June 5th

Don’t miss this spectacular event in celebration of the magical books written by Chittenango hometown legend L. Frank Baum. Includes a musical parade, Oz costume contest, coloring contest, craft fair, hot air balloon launches, fireworks and more.

World Oceans Day
Saturday June 4th

Head to the zoo to celebrate World Oceans Day. Zookeepers will share special aquatic resident demonstrations and activities, and explain how we can all make a difference in helping to protect our oceans.

Where: Rosamond Gifford Zoo, One Conservation Place, Syracuse
When: 10am to 4:30pm

Outdoor Movie Night: Wall-E
Saturday June 4th

Meet for an outdoor movie night at the Green Lakes Lakeview Picnic Area! There will be a campfire, and s’mores and popcorn will be served. At 9pm watch Wall-E on an inflatable screen. Bring chairs, bug spray, and blankets.

Yoga for Families
Tuesday June 7th

Enjoy this full body experience with kiddos ages 3-6. Features puppets, stories, songs, yoga poses and breathing exercises. Pre-registration is required.

Syracuse Greek Festival
Thursday June 9th – Sunday June 12th

Celebrate rich Hellenic culture at St. Sophia’s with delicious Greek food and pastries while listening to music and watching special dance performances, then take a tour of the beautiful church sanctuary.

Syracuse Polish Festival
Friday June 10th – Sunday June 12th

Celebrate Polish culture, taste traditional Polish cuisine and beer, enjoy great live music and dance entertainment, and head to the children’s area for games, face painting, a magician and a clown!

Cicero Community Festival
Friday June 10th – Saturday June 11th

Check out this weekend of fun, featuring a cruise night, oldies music, Mardi Gras themed parade, martial arts demonstrations, dance performances, kids zone, and fire works!

When: 5pm to 11pm on Friday, 11:30am to 11pm on Saturday
Cost: $3 on Friday, free admission on Saturday

Syracuse Soap Box Derby
Saturday June 11th

Boys and girls ages 7-17 will compete in the regional Syracuse Soap Box Derby to qualify for the World Championships in July.

Where: 2100 Block of S. Geddes Street, Syracuse
When: 9am to 3pm
Cost: Free for spectators

Seneca River Day
Saturday June 11th

Enjoy a family fun filled day along the river with entertainment, food, live music, antique cars, contests, a vendor fair, balloon animals, bounce house and more! Don’t forget to buy your duck tickets and to cheer on contestants in the Anything Floats contest!

Outdoor Movie Night: The Good Dinosaur
Saturday June 11th

Syracuse Air Show

Aviators will display their flying and aerobatic skills to spectators below.

Cost: Adults are $15 with advanced purchase, $20 at the gate. Children ages 5-15 are $10 with advanced purchase, $15 at the gate. Children under 4 are free.

Birth Basics Class
Monday June 13th

At this event you will learn about delayed cord clamping, postnatal care, placenta encapsulation, and the role of a doula. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided by CNY Doula Connection.

Downtown Farmer’s Market
Tuesday June 14th

The Downtown Farmer’s Market returns on Tuesdays through October 11th. The market will feature more than 50 local farmers and produce dealers selling fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, eggs, cheese, baked goods, flowers, plants and more.

Zoo to You at Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards

Kiddos will get a chance to see zoo animals up close!

Juneteenth
Saturday June 18th

The entire community is invited to join in this celebration of African-American culture and the end of slavery. This event features live entertainment, an educational area, a culturally diverse food court, the Dr. Henry A. Washington Healthy Pavilion, exhibits, and more.

Bob the Builder at WCNY Broadcast and Education Center
Saturday June 18th

Bob, the beloved PBS KIDS character known for using science, technology, engineering and math skills to solve problems and get things done with a positive attitude will be meeting fans at 11 a.m., 12 noon, and 1 p.m. Be sure to bring your cameras! The day also includes giveaways, episode broadcasts on the courtyards “big screen”, and fun family-friendly activity stations. In honor of Father’s Day, Dads will receive a free book to read to their children to encourage learning throughout the summer.

Plazapalooza at the Everson Museum
Saturday June 18th

A one day festival celebrating the arts and creativity in our community! Free museum admission all day long, plus a Makers’ Market, art making, demonstrations, raku firing, music, dancing, Beer Garden, food truck rodeo and more to do on the Everson Community Plaza!

Father’s Day Strawberry Festival
Sunday June 19th

Relax under tents and enjoy a beautiful Father’s Day summer picnic with irresistable homemade strawberry shortcakes, ice cream and whipped cream!

LEON Festival
Thursday June 23rd

Enjoy a family fun night out celebrating the half-way point to Christmas featuring games, live entertainment and fireworks!

Zoovies Summer Movie Series
Thursday June 23rd

Tour the zoo with your family at 6pm, then enjoy the animal themed movie Rio at dusk! Hot dogs, popcorn and light refreshments will be available for purchase. This event will be held rain or shine – don’t forget your blankets and/or chairs!

Jamesville Balloon Fest
Friday June 24th to Sunday June 26th

This kick off to summer event features balloons, musical entertainment, arts, crafts, food, beverages and more! Balloons take flight each day (weather permitting) and add to the excitement of the event.

When: 4pm to 11pm on Friday, 1pm to 11pm on Saturday and 1pm to 10pm on Sunday

Frog Catching Party
Saturday June 25th

Children ages 3 and up are welcome to catch frogs with Naturalists at Phillips Pond. Pre-registration is required.

Cherry Festival
Saturday June 25th – Sunday June 25th

Head to Varick Winery and Vineyard for two whole days of live music and fun.  Savor BBQ, ice cream, baked goods and of course pick cherries with the kiddos!

Family Friendly Comedy and Magic Show
Sunday June 26th

Head to Green Lakes State Park for a family friendly comedy and magic show! Afterwards children will get to take home their very own balloon souvenir.

Onondaga Lake Family Fun Fishing Day
Sunday June 26th

Enjoy a family day of catch and release fishing. This event includes a learn to fish program, fishing derby and an annual carp fishing classic.

Where: Onondaga Lake Park at Willow Bay
When: 8am to 3pm
Cost: Free admission; Fishing derby costs $2 for adults and $1 for children under 15
